The Story

Overlooking this site is the beautiful Slievenamon Mountain - often believed to be the home of the gods. The Irish name for the Mountain is “Sliabh na mBan” - the Mountain of the Women. The summit of Slievenamon contains ancient burial cairns, believed to be the portals to the Otherworld inhabited by the Fairies, and directly connected to the Fairy Forts.

Legend has it that the mountain got its name from a race to the top of the Mountain designed by Fionn MacCumhaill to help him choose a spouse. The winner would be Fionn's wife. Fionn had fallen in love with Grainne, daughter of Cormac, the King of Ireland, and told her a secret shortcut to the top so she could win the race.Unfortunately, on the night of the wedding, Grainne fell in love with Diarmuid, one of Fionn's warriors, and the couple eloped together.

A furious Fionn set out with his men to hunt them down. The adventures are told in the epic story Téraiocht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne. To this day, across Ireland there are dozens of so-called “Diarmivid and Grainne beds" — local places where the couple are reputed to have spent a night while on the run from Fionn.
