The Story
The Giant's Causeway in County Antrim is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legend has it the Causeway was created as a result of an argument between Fionn MacCumhail and a Scottish Giant named Benandonner. Fionn decided to go to Scotland to fight Benandonner. To get across, Fionn gathered a series of giant rocks which he threw one after the other into the sea until they reached the Scottish Coast.
On reaching Scotland, Fionn realised Benandonner was considerably larger than he had been lead to believe, so he quickly returned to Ireland without meeting him. Fionn's wife Sadhbh advised him to disguise himself as a baby in readiness for Benandonner’s expected visit. When Benandonner arrived at Fionn's house, Sadhbh told him Fionn was not home but invited him in to see their baby. When he saw Fionn disguised as a baby, Benandonner decided that if a mere baby was that big, the father must be far larger than himself!
In fright, Benandonner rushed back to Scotland, tearing away as much of the Causeway as he could in his haste to put as much distance between Ireland and himself as possible. Thus, the myth of the Giant's Causeway was born, along with the explanation as to how some of the Causeway no longer remains.
