The Story
Munster is one of four Irish professional provincial rugby teams. They compete in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup. The team represents the Irish Rugby Football Union's Munster Branch. The team crest depicts three gold crowns and a stag. The three crowns represent three of the medieval Lordships in Munster :- the O'Briens (Thomond), the Butlers (Ormond) and the FitzGeralds (Desmond). The stag was included because in Irish folklore a stag was portrayed as an animal that protected its territory.
The team motto is "To the brave and faithful, nothing is impossible” - derived from the motto of the MacCarthy clan — "Forti et Fideli nihil difficile". The McCarthys ruled Munster during the Middle Ages. The first touring side to play Munster were the famous Original All Blacks, who lined out against Munster in the Markets Field, Limerick, in November 1905. Munster were defeated that day 33-0. One of their sweetest victories was when Munster became the first Irish team to beat the All Blacks. The 12-0 victory took place on Tuesday 31 October 1978 at Thomond Park, in front of a crowd of 12,000.
Traditionally there has often been a crossover between rugby and Gaelic football in Ireland. The skills of Gaelic Football are very transferable into the skills of Rugby. The punt kick, the high catch, the ball carrying are all very useful skills to have for both games. It has been widely stated (by the Irish at least) that the Irish have an advantage in aerial duels due to having spent a large part of their childhood contesting for high balls from kick outs in the GAA.
